Cougar Shots Don't Fall Against Metro

The Cougars took on the Roadrunners from Metro State in a rare Sunday afternoon game on December 17th. The Cougars were looking to rebound from a tough two-point loss from the night before to UCCS 60-62. The loss dropped the Cougars record to 3-7 (1-4 RMAC), while the Roadrunners brought in a record of 7-4 (3-2 RMAC) after defeating Colorado School of Mines on Saturday night, 74-61.

The first quarter saw Metro State bear down on CCU with a defensive effort the Cougars haven't been exposed to yet this season. The Roadrunners resistance held the Cougars to just five points in the opening quarter.

The second quarter brought better numbers for the Cougars who outscored the Roadrunners 13-12 in that period. Down 15 with just two minutes left in the half, CCU ended the second on a 7-0 run to get within eight points when the teams headed for the locker rooms.

The first half was not exactly highlight material for either team, with the Roadrunners and Cougars each shooting under 30% for the first two quarters.

Metro would outscore CCU 19-10 in the third quarter, including an 8-0 run to start it off. It was another impressive showing of the Roadrunners defense, who held the Cougars to just 10 points, eight of which came from the free-throw line. The score at the end of the third was 45-28 in favor of the Roadrunners.

The Cougars came into the fourth quarter with a fire, opening up the first five minutes on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to a manageable 10 points. After that, the Roadrunners would begin to go shot for shot with the Cougars, and the game would end in a Metro State win by a score of 56-43.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Haley Shaner who dropped 11 points, and by Jordan Baer who was the only other Cougar in double digits with 10 points, and contributed eight rebounds and a season high six blocks. Colorado Christian's record falls to 3-8 overall, and 1-5 in RMAC in the wake of their lowest shooting percentage of the season at just 25.5%.

The Cougars will be off until after Christmas and will head to Alamosa, CO, on December 29th, to take on the Grizzlies from Adams State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
